La Paz, Baja California Sur: For the eighth time in the past 4 years, through the Los Cabos Children’s Foundation’s (LCCF) program “Spirit of Love” and in collaboration with the State Government (Secretary of Health and DIF), Opening Hearts – Abriendo Corazones, Corazón de Niño and Amigos de los Niños, the medical team from Children’s Hospital and Medical Center of Omaha, Nebraska, along with the team in training of Salvatierra Hospital in La Paz, held a round of pediatric cardiac surgeries from November 9 to 16 this year.
During this surgical round a total of 6 surgeries were performed in children from 0 to 10 years old coming from different municipalities of the state of Baja California Sur. From June 2013 to November 2016, 8 rounds of cardiac surgeries have been performed in BCS resulting in a total of 88 surgeries in 83 children. Since August of this year to date, the local medical team of Salvatierra Hospital in La Paz, has already performed 8 other cardiac surgeries in minors for a total of 91 Southern Baja children benefited.
One of the highlights of this round was the role of the local medical team since, for the first time, all procedures were carried out by the Salvatierra team and only supervised by the Omaha medical team, led by the Cardiac Surgeon Dr. James Hammel. “This round, we stood back and observed how the local team worked and this makes us very proud”, said Dr. Hammel.
“LCCF remains committed to supporting the pediatric programs of Salvatierra Hospital for the benefit of all children and adolescents in the state. Not only Cardiology, which currently receives the most resources in the effort for the program to be accredited, but also the Oncology Unit, Cleft Lip and Palate Program and the Pediatric and Neonatal Intensive Care Units”, expressed Marisa Comella, LCCF’s Executive Director, after congratulating the team that has brought together many wills to save lives, like Ingrid Valeria, who has received two surgeries, the last one during this round, and wanted to be present at this closing to thank everyone involved through her father’s sensible words.
“Today we take the opportunity to announce that we donated surgical instruments and two ventilators that will be vital to treat children in critical health conditions with a value of more than 1.6 million pesos”, concluded LCCF’s director. It is worth mentioning that part of these funds were collected at the latest Bisbee’s fishing tournament, where LCCF was entrusted with the donations of some teams such as Bad Medicine, Bibi, Fast Ball and Quiteña.
