Mobilize Mankind

Mobilize Mankind is an organization that does exactly what its name says - it helps
people move. The founders and volunteers discovered that 12 million people worldwide,
many of whom are children, are in need of wheelchairs. In the U.S., the cost of
a wheelchair averages about $800.
However, in many developing countries, entire families must exist on less than $1000
per year. For these families, wheelchairs or other orthopedic equipment is prohibitively
expensive. At the same time, in the U.S. alone, thousands of wheelchairs are gathering
dust in closets, attics and garages. Mobilize Mankind's goal is to be the conduit
between the need and the solution.
In this case, Mobilize Mankind helps the children of Los Cabos who have limited
resources. These children have a variety of diagnoses, such as cerebral palsy, spina
bifida, muscular dystrophy and spinal cord injuries. They range in age from 8 months
to 16 years. Its mission is to assist these children to access their environments
by providing used orthopedic equipment, including wheelchairs, walkers, braces and
assistive technologies.
Mobilize Mankind in Los Cabos is committed to at least a 10+ year program to work
in all aspects of the children's quality of life, including community, home, school
and clinics through education, training and environmental modifications that ensure
the donated wheelchairs are used effectively.
The program created by Mobilize Mankind is designed to focus on five distinct constituencies:
the children, the parents, the schools, the clinics and the community. To achieve
its goals, Mobilize Mankind has determined that these constituencies must be integrated
into a common team to assist children in all areas of their lives.
Equipment is donated to children, with parents present so they learn how to operate
it, and to special education schools and rehabilitation clinics. Mobilize Mankind
also provides education for special education principals and therapists in Los Cabos,
and builds ramps at family dwellings.
As part of our approach of working with successful local organizations to help children,
LCCF has donated a Suburban to transport wheelchairs and a $7000 gift, which will
be used for repairing, modifying and distributing wheelchairs, re-evaluating children
with wheelchairs and evaluating new children who need wheelchairs.
